Yes you, I'm talking to you mamas. I know I know, your thinking "pssshhhh what a luxury! I don't have time for that! I don't have extra many for that!" Well let me tell you what. It may just save your life and your sanity.
A few years ago (before I had kids or was even thinking of a family. Terri Hatcher wrote a book something titled "stop eating the burnt toast" or something like that (I'm too lazy to look it up right now) anywho I was watching her promote it on the Today show and what struck me was she was talking about the sacrifice moms go through and always putting ourselves last . How often do you run around cooking dinner getting everything ready reminding your kids to chew thoroughly only to sit at the last minute gobble down a few bites and get back up and start cleaning? How often as moms do we put ourselves last? We are usually last to bed and first to rise, thereby cutting out precious hours of sleep. We are often eating the "bottom of the pot" as they say where there is only broth no vegetables.
Well myself and every airline pilot out there are here to tell you to stop! When you get on a plane the first thing they tell you in emergency landing preparedness is that if you are flying with another passenger elderly or children that you are to put your oxygen mask on first BEFORE assisting others. I know this flies in the face of our instinct which is to do everything for them first but if we did that and passed out and were unable to assist them further it wouldn't have done us any good.
So back to the massage. I recently saw a mom in my office with a massive bulging disc. Crazy part was she had no idea! All she new was that she had been in pain for sometime and her fingers where starting to go numb. When I started working on her I knew in 3 minutes of testing that she needed to get an MRI and see an ortho stat. But I spent the rest of the time I had with her working on her mid, low back and legs. She said she felt so renewed that the pain in her upper back seemed to even subside. I asked her why she wasn't getting regular massage and I got the same answers I always get from moms... No extra time, no extra money. Let me tell you FIND THE TIME and trust me its cheaper then long term care for back pain neck pain and pscychiatry.
First of all when WHEN in a week do you ever find yourself with 1 hour of absolute peace? Blissful silence sans the gentle lulling of spa music? That alone is worth the money!!
Second when you take the time to relax yourself your mood improves and your ability to parent and handle things in a much more gentle and loving way are much easier .
Third an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Getting massage relaxes the muscles, lengthens them to prevent injuries, and brings fresh blood to the tissue. It increases circulation, and autoimmune response in your body.
We are very fortunate living here in Orange County we have access to some of the best spas around! Here are my faves.
First let me say all massage is good. I lovingly refer to gentle spa massage as fluff and rub. Feels good but didn't get all the knots out. Second getting therapeutic massage from a chiropractors office doesn't insure you are getting a deeper massage or a more specific one at that.
I love spa Bellagio in irvine, it's pricier at $110 for 60 minutes but I have never had anything but an awesome experience
I love the montage, I've had a few great massages and a few "just ok" ones. But for the price you pay you can use their spa lounge, pool, jacuzzi etc for the whole day! Def an awesome mini retreat.
I am not a fan of spa membership clubs. Mostly because they pay their therapists so poorly and work them for 8 hrs, it's not worth the savings in $
I love Asian foot massage spas! If you've never been it may be a bit weird at first. You are fully clothed and the room is quietly set up for 6-8 people. You sit in giant lazy boy chairs. Your feet are put in a warm bucket of water while they do acupressure on head neck arms and then they spend 20 minutes on legs and feet. A great deal for about $40 for an hour. My favorite is Jade foot Spa on culver but there are several in OC.
I also really love a company called tranquility massage they come to your house for about $80 for a one hour massage totally worth it if you have space enough for them to set up.
If you have a favorite therapist or spa post it in the comments section below!!
So now replace 2 meals eating out a month in your family budget for a massage for you and the hubs. I recommend once a week but at minimum once a month, your health and family will thank you for taking care of yourself!
