How to make a twirl skirt from old t-shirts!

This weekend my daughter and I wanted to try something new. I've made a few tutu for her in the past but the outcome is always the same....she's excited at first, puts it on immediately and then ten minutes later she takes it off because it's scratchy. I tried to find another fun playtime dress up option that I could make and have seen the skirts made from fabric scraps. However, I hesitated to make one because I kept imagining with every twirl she made there would be several threads flying off onto my floor. After finding several tutorials using old t-shirts to make cute scarves, necklaces, headbands etc. I decided to take my old maternity shirts to make her a twirl skirt. T-shirts are not only soft but when cut the material does not fray. So....here it goes!

T-Shirt Twirl Skirt
1. Take a few old cotton t-shirts and cut off the bottom seam.
2. Fold the shirts in half and cut it into 1 inch strips.
3. Take each strip and stretch it out to the length you want.
Don't worry about them all being even, you can trim them later.
4. Cut off the side seams at each end.

5. Cut a piece of elastic the size of your childs waist and glue the ends together.
6. Fold each strip in half and loop over the piece of elastic.
7. Take the ends and pull them through the loop.
8. Tie the pieces snug, but not too tight or the elastic will fold.
And you're done!
Even though it's a little short my daughter loves it. She calls it her "hula hula skirt".
I think this would be great for a child 2yrs or younger,
next time I will use one of my husband's shirts so that it is longer.
I'd love to hear from you if you try this out, good luck!
