Benefits of Skin-to-Skin Care for Mother and Baby

Skin-to-skin or kangaroo care is one of natures most powerful tools for the initial care of a newborn. The benefits to both mother and baby are numerous, and in many scenarios proves to be life saving, as was seen in the dramatic story stated in the article linked below. It is a story of how placing a new baby on his mother's chest literally saved her life. It's a powerful story yet something that is also just as powerful for each of us to do with our new babies.

Signs that your baby is well fed!

Two of the most common questions I get asked is "How do I know my baby is getting enough" and "How do I know if he is hungry?"

For a new mommy, these cues can be hard to interpret. So here is a clear easy guideline to help you out...

SIGNS THAT YOUR BABY IS WELL FED

  • Your baby is alert and active
  • Your baby is happy and satisfied after breastfeeding
  • Your baby breastfeeds…

Now that I'm 20 weeks pregnant with my second child, I decided it was time to start shopping around for the necessities. I breastfeed my son, Colin, for 13 months and rarely gave him a bottle. Super Cute Halloween Costumes for Toddlers and Newborns (Girls)

Ok, I know I am getting ahead of myself here seeing that it's not even September yet. But knowing I have a c-section planned in October, I felt the need to get ready for Halloween NOW.... I don't want to go into labor early and have no time to get my kids Halloween costumes. So guess what, I've already ordered them! Reagan's FAVORITE character is Minnie Mouse so of course, that's what she is going to be this year. And, with a newborn on the way, I decided our newest will be…

As a Mom...

How has motherhood changed my life? How hasn't it, right? In attempting to get my head around this HUGE question, the following comes to mind drawn either from personal experience, the account of many dear mommy friends, or simply from the age old cliches, which some how came true (in the last 13 months, for…

If A Newborn Weighs 8 lbs, What's Up With the Other 30?!?!?!

When I first got pregnant with my daughter, I was determined to stay in shape. I wanted to be able to jump right back into my pre-pregnancy clothes after she was born. I felt like I ate pretty healthy in my first trimester and I continued with my rigorous workout routine of gym time and ashtanga yoga (although I will admit there were a few more trips to the bagel shop than normal….. and maybe a few…

A Cure to Car Ride Meltdowns- Portable DVD Player for Car

I thought all babies like the car? I have heard of people driving their kids around in the car to get them to sleep. Well, the car was not a favorite in our house for a long time. Driving to the store, dry cleaners or just to get gas was a struggle. Last September we had a five hour road trip planned. I had to figure out how we were going to get through this drive, seeing that a five minute drive was tough.

Someone recommended that we purchase a DVD player for the…

Pregnancy Amnesia

It’s interesting that I am pregnant again after only 10 months since the birth of my daughter. Especially since I remember specifically saying at one point, “I am never doing this again!” ( I left a few ‘not-so-nice’ words out of that phrase for the sake of keeping this post PG rated).

But…

Fussy Baby- Is My Baby Colic?

At Reagan’s 4-week check up, her pediatrician said to me, “oh, and watch for colic, it peaks at about 6 weeks”. I thought to myself, “nah, not my daughter, she’s an easy baby”. Well…..6 weeks on the dot, colic ws in full force and it got progressively worse as the weeks went on.

Her…
