Moms of boys I want to know! What age did you let your boys go to the public restrooms by themselves?

I have two boys aged 6 and 3 now. This is a topic I have been brewing with my fellow mommy friends. I am SUPER paranoid about letting the 6 year old go to the bathroom on his own, and he's been asking permission to. He's already starting to feel weird about going into the women's bathroom, but there is NO WAY I would let him enter the men's public restroom anywhere, anytime...unless accompanied by my husband of course.
