New Mom - Overwhelmed by Breastfeeding - Any advice / encouragement?

Hi everyone -

I just (a week ago) had my first child and have had good success with breastfeeding so far.  The problem is that I (in my emotional post-pregnancy state) am feeling a little overwhelmed about the committment to it and have begun worrying aboout how the heck I am ever going to see the light of day again...

My breastfeeding involves a plethora of different tools - pillows, Brest friend, burp clothes....all this to get the baby properly aligned so that my nipples do not feel like they are going to fall off....I am sure all you breastfeeding mommies can relate.  I am already starting to worry about how the heck I am going to go to my 2-week OB follow-up - she always runs late, what if the baby gets hungry?  How will I breastfeed without all my "tools".  All the literature specifically states not to introduce the bottle before 3 weeks (at the earliest)....

Does anyone have any advice / encouragement for all of this?  I have read so much yet I still feel like I know so little....

Congrats on your new baby Molly! If i survived Bfing and still going strong after 7months then everyone else will! It was so hard for me, I literally couldnt go anywhere without worrying how am I going to feed this little one and she used to want to eat alsmost every hour which made it even harder for me to want to leave the house. Worst of all I was all by myself, I'm from South Africa so my mom is back there, she couldnt make it here to help me out:( The emotions were all over the place, thinking if my mom was here maybe things would be easier. However, my daughter is now 7months and we're still bfing so hang in there and before you know it you wont believe how much time flies. You are doing the best thing ever for yourself and little Hannah:)

Congrats again and dont despair!
Sounds like you got a lot of good advice. I remember feeling like this is never going to get better and how do so many people do this!! I had a lactation consultant come to my house b/c I thought I would never get it. I was using my breast friend and nipple shields. Then, I would say about 3 weeks or so after breastfeeding, he didn't need the shield anymore, then my breast friend wasn't needed. It does get better!!
BTW, I was obsessed with it also. I went on kellymom.com a lot and some doctor in Canada's website(dont even remember the name now!)
Ashley-- do you still co sleep? when I mastered breastfeeding lying down, it saved my sleep! I would then just fall asleep while Dylan was feeding, so he ended up sleeping 1/2 the night with me. Just wondering if you were still co sleeping or got your LO into a crib again?

Lay on your side in bed, put your child on there side and latch them on!!!!!!!!!!!! Saved my life and got me all my sleep! I did co-op sleeping as well. Also dr's appts are the #1 place I feel most comfortable breatfeeding!!!! Whip em out with a cover in the lobby and I don't even care if I do have a cover in the patients room. Hold your head up high and proud because you are doing the best thing for your baby!!!! Everyone knows how hard it is and you should be so proud of yourself. Congrats to you. Keep it up!!!!! Check out Milkalicious when you can too!!!! xoxo
For the most part yes. It's easier for me and my husband doesn't feel our son is ready to be on his own yet (I brought it up a couple of days ago that maybe we could try the crib a bit and my hubby said no not yet). Around 7ish my son lets me know he is usually ready for bed. I nurse him to sleep on my side. Then usually by 8 or 9 I put him in the pack and play next to our bed for the 1st half of the night (unless I am too tired and just fall asleep with him while nursing him down). My lil guy wakes up anywhere from 12-3am and I put him back in bed, latch him on, and fall back asleep until 7 or 8am :)
