We are somewhat new to the area and I am looking for a hair salon that is good but won't be 1/3 of my rent.  I am hoping to spend under $60 for cut and color.

I used to go to the Aveda Institute in Charlotte and loved it.  I never worried about getting a Supercut or having my hair fall out from a treatment.

I saw Toni&Guy in the directory but I didn't see pricing.  Is this a school?  Are there any reputable beauty schools in Orange County?

Thanks.

Irvine Echo Chic Salon ask for Billy.
In Irvine, Echo Chic Salon ask for Billy.
Oops.... My excuse pregnancy has frozen my brain cells!  It's "Eco Hair Salon" :-)
Paul Mitchell school in costa Mesa. I would get my hair cut and colored there by level 2 students and had some good experiences. My only advise is have a strong idea of what you want and bring pictures! Pictures really helped with getting what I wanted. You can't just say say whatever you think looks good. That never ended well. :/

I love the idea of Eco Salon, but it is a little out of my price range right now.  My hubby is a grad student here at UCI, and we have two kids.

I have been to the Aveda Institute before when we lived in NC.  I am not really picky when it comes to my hair, so I love the idea of a school. I do usually take in a picture because it helps start a conversation about what I expect from that haircut.  Thanks for the information.  I will look into the Paul Mitchell school.

Toni & Guy is definitely expensive but they are good. OC Mommies Discount Club does get a discount but I don't know if it's enough to bring it into your price range. They do have a school and that's the Costa Mesa location off of Bristol & Town Center Drive near the Deloitte building. I haven't been to the school but I'd imagine they would be good as well. Toni & Guy have high standards.

I have a great stylist but she is in Seal Beach & her cost would start at around $80 for cut & color. If you are interested you can find her at Thairapy Salon & Spa and her name is Betsy. She's awesome! I've gone in and said, low maintenance with style and below the shoulders and I've walked out loving it. I do something like that almost every time I go in now. I leave the style up to her cause she ALWAYS does something good and sometimes better than what I could think of. :)

I went few times to see Justing at Eco Chic Salon and loved him, but I have to say that they are definitely a bit pricey.

I love the idea of trying the Paul Mitchell school in Costa Mesa. Back in Germany I used the Wella School where the students were strongly supervised by very experienced hairdressers/teachers. Is it here the same?
Wow... I must be paying a fortune in the past for my hair. I save a good 45% or more at Eco Chic than what I've spent in the last 10 years with other stylist. I thought they were very inexpensive in comparison to every stylist I've gone to. I use to $189-$230 depending on what I get, last week a highlight with professional Billy was only a $100 vs.. $150
Not sure if you have found anyone yet!  I go to Heidi at Shampoo Cocktails in Aliso Viejo.    I don't get highlight or color (thank goodness I love my natural color and my girl isn't making me go gray just yet :), but my stylist charges $50 for a cut.  I had an amazing stylist in SF and it took me forever to find my current girl.
Hush Hush Bang Bang in Costa Mesa (kara or lisa) but if you want a school, yes, Paul Mitchell or COBA in the Orange Circle.

I go to AG Lounge in Irvine with Corinne. Love her, but I've never used anyone else in the salon. I am not sure what her rate is just for cut because I always get color, but I think it's $60-65? She only works Thurs-Fri-Sat.

Good luck!

Hi! I don't actually have a recommendation, but have you tried LivingSocial or Groupon?  The only problem is that you can usually only buy one, so if you want to go back to that salon, the next visit would be pricier.  If you don't mind stylist-hopping, though, it might be an option.  Today's livingsocial is a cut & color for $50, so I thought of this discussion.
