Okay- So the Baby's First Year Journal, the pregnancy website, and the books are all saying that babies the age of mine ( 9 mos in a week) should be encouraged to start learning how to feed themselves and even start getting used to eating the same foods we do.  I know these sources are not definitive and just guidelines, but my baby is nowhere near all this.  Well, maybe she is.  She's JUST starting to kind of figure out picking up a corn puff in her fist and kind of sucking on it.  She will hold a spoon and put it in her mouth, but not with food on it actually putting a spoonful of food in her mouth.  And she still really only wants baby food.  I tried giving her little pieces of banana and really mashed up sweet potatoes.  She gags and makes a scrunchy face.  She also won't use a sippy cup yet and won't drink water out of a bottle.  I think this is pretty normal considering all babies move at their own pace.  Any thoughts?

Completely normal! :D Nothing to worry about...in fact you should be thrilled. The longer they do the baby food, the easier if you ask me. LOL! (Mostly because I'm not much of a cook.) Of course you can just keep offering her finger foods and sippy cups and one day she'll be interested.

My first son ate baby food until he was like 18 months old. (Grandma wouldn't give up on it when she watched him while I worked.) I think he started regular foods around 9 months or so. Excuse the blunt honesty, but my second baby (now 10 months) is a nightmare when it comes to getting in the high chair. I dread mealtimes - he won't have anything to do with baby food (except Gerber bananas and mixed berries for some reason). He wants to feed himself with his hands but will only have a few bites of most finger foods before screaming and banging on the highchair tray. The only thing he is happy to eat is pasta with sauce and sometimes grapes. The funny thing is, he happens to be much more affectionate and cuddly than my first son was outside of the highchair. Anyway, I yearn for those jarred baby food days. LOL!
Totally normal! My 18 month old only sometimes eats what we're eating - same issue as Amber - it's not always something she can handle. We're noticing that a lot more over the last few months she is more interested in what we eat, so we offer it to her when she asks.

As far as a sippy cup, it took a while to find one that she would take and then get her to drink from it, but she'll get it eventually. It helped with ours to put ice water in the cup because she liked sucking on the spout because it was cold and she was teething. From there, drinking was not so much of a leap. But don't stress about the books... you've got plenty of time! Offer her variety and healthy choices, and she'll be fine.
